Anfield Online verdict:

Steven Gerrard burst on to the Liverpool scene back in 1998 after graduating from a good old fashioned Liverpool FC YTS. His phenomal rise effectively ended Jamie Redknapp's Liverpool career, and he has shown prominence not only in the Premiership as one of the best midfielders, but also at international level.

Steven was unfortunate to miss out on the 2002 World Cup due to an injury, and indeed his early Liverpool career has been plagued with some injury concerns, mainly because his body appeared not to want to stop growing.

However Gerard Houllier's last season, 2003/04 and Steven Gerrard was Liverpool FC. Almost single-handedly steering them in to 4th and the Champions League spot.

He is set to be a key man in Euro 2004.

Liverpool's club captain, and his determination and commitment make him a real fans' favourite. We salute you Sir Steven!
